Trade Policy Reflections After the 2024 Elections: Navigating Challenges in 2025

Trade Partners Sweden reports from ICC's world trade breakfast where this year's geopolitical challenges were in focus.

At ICC’s latest world trade breakfast, the consequences of 2024’s many elections in the EU, USA, United Kingdom, and India were analyzed. This year’s seminar was characterized by discussions about the increased uncertainty and unpredictability that now prevails in the global trade arena.

To highlight these challenges, ICC gathered an expert panel consisting of Håkan Jevrell, Lena Sellgren, Paul Palmstedt, and Nesli Al Mufti. The panel discussed in depth the government’s priorities, business adaptation to uncertainty, and the conditions for Swedish export companies in today’s complex geopolitical landscape.

Among the central issues raised were:

  • Potential American tariffs’ effect on global trade and the EU’s expected countermeasures
  • WTO’s role in managing the ongoing developments
  • EU’s work program for 2025 and its potential to strengthen competitiveness

Despite the challenges, the panel noted that global trade continues to grow. The discussions concluded with a forward-looking reflection on what positive trade policy developments we can expect during 2025.

ICC also presented its policy priorities for 2025, with particular focus on the need for strengthened multilateral cooperation at a time when this is needed more than ever.
