Insights from Nordic Retail Summit 2024

On 2nd October, the Nordic Retail Summit was held at Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre, a conference organised by Svensk Handel. Leading representatives from retail, authorities, and politics gathered to inspire each other and discuss the most important future issues in retail. Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson gave the opening speech and highlighted the role of retail and the importance of Sweden as a Trading Nation for the Swedish economy and societal development. This new and powerful concept, "Sweden as a Trading Nation", coined by Svensk Handel, serves as an important reminder of our industry's central position in Swedish business life. It emphasises not only the economic weight of retail but also its role as an innovator, employer, and community builder.

Trade Partners Sweden was naturally present to represent our members. President Camilla Kock summarises the day and shares her key insights:

“Nordic retail summit. So insightful and enjoyable. I take with me exciting dialogues about sustainability, security/crime, and AI. How will these topics affect retail going forward? The common denominator throughout the day and across all topics is collaboration – collaboration between politics, laws, companies, competitors, and consumers.

Legislation in each area is incredibly important and crucial, but we must also ensure that it is as simple as possible for companies to implement. Politicians must act faster now than ever to ensure fair competition, so that Chinese e-commerce giants like Shein and Temu don’t sail past without having to consider EU regulations. How can politics promote all Swedish small businesses keeping up with the AI train? Sweden was first in the world with the internet, but we’re falling behind in AI technology. How can we change that? What strategies exist? The UK already had an AI strategy in 2021. When will we see an AI strategy for Sweden and Swedish companies?

It’s clear that I want to hear more from Ludvig Strand, who is an Emerging Tech & AI Future analyst at Axel Johnson. Keep an eye on him – maybe one day we’ll understand what AI agents are and how they can make our business grow? Finally: We are undoubtedly in a changing world, but Lars-Johan Jarnheimer (Chairman of the Board at INGKA Holding B.V.) concluded the day by emphasising the importance of returning to the core. No matter how much the world changes, it’s always most important to go back to the customer. Without customer focus, there is no way forward!”

Thank you to Svensk Handel for an enriching and educational day. We look forward to continued discussions and development in these areas.
