Curious about Almedalen 2026? Soft power, innovation, Nordic collaboration and hope for the future

Our CEO Helena Waker was on the ground at Almedalen 2026 – and came home with both energy and hope. In her column, she shares her takeaways on soft power, Nordic collaboration, and why future competitiveness is built together. Read about the conversations that stayed with her, the book that's become her summer read, and why the meeting between people and industries is exactly what fuels her optimism.

I’m leaving Almedalen with both energy and hope.

It’s easy to get stuck on headlines about worry, uncertainty and challenges. But during the week I also encountered something else, something far stronger – thousands of engaged people, courageous entrepreneurs, thoughtful politicians, researchers, companies and organisations working every day to move Sweden forward. That gave me real hope for the future.

We’re stronger together. Collaboration – not least between the Nordic countries – was raised again and again as one of our greatest strengths. Together, we can build the innovation, sustainability and competitiveness needed to meet the future. Whether the conversations were about AI, trade, culture, textiles, security or business, the same message kept coming back: future competitiveness is built on collaboration, innovation and the courage to invest for the long term.

AI is no longer a future scenario. The discussions at Tech Arena showed that AI is already about concrete applications, here and now. At the same time, it became clear that human skills, creativity and relationships matter even more as technology takes over routine tasks.

Competitiveness and the green transition require partnership. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship, innovation and growth at a time when Europe needs to strengthen its position between the US and China. In the textile and fashion industry, discussions centred on re-industrialisation, circularity and Swedish wool – with a clear ambition to strengthen Swedish and European production, together with business, politics and academia.

Culture and creativity are strategic assets. Conversations about soft power and Stockholm’s role as a city of culture and music showed that creative and cultural industries don’t just create experiences – they strengthen Sweden’s appeal, innovative capacity and international competitiveness. Something we at Trade Partners Sweden and Stockholm Fashion District fully stand behind.

Collaboration was the common thread throughout the week. No single actor can solve the challenges of the future alone, but together we can create the conditions for sustainable growth. For us, Almedalen was a clear confirmation that trade, fashion and the creative industries are an important part of Sweden’s future – and that our role as a meeting place, network and knowledge platform feels more important than ever.

Thank you to everyone – people, companies and partners – who contributed knowledge, ideas and engagement during the week. It’s in the meeting between people, industries and countries that new opportunities are created – and that’s exactly what gives me hope for the future.

One of the talking points of the week was the book Soft Power by foreign correspondent Martin Gelin, whom I had the pleasure of sitting next to at dinner one evening. The book explores how culture and values have become central geopolitical weapons at a time when the West is under pressure from authoritarian states – and it’s shaping up to be one of my summer reads.

Best summer wishes,
Helena Waker
