The Nordics, Business, and the Next Step – Report from Almedalen 2025

This year's Almedalen Week was characterised by geopolitical challenges but also optimism for the future and a clear message: we become stronger together. We participated in several debates and panel discussions, with the goal of contributing insights from our members. Together, we want to create the best opportunities for growth, competitive business conditions, and responsible trade both within Sweden and internationally. During the week, several common themes emerged, from Nordic cooperation to the need for innovation, collaboration, the role of culture in democracy, and concrete business models for sustainability.

The Nordics as an Idea and Identity
Many emphasized the importance of viewing the Nordics as a united force in the world—not just geographically, but also as carriers of shared values. Freedom, trust, and a democratic culture give us a unique advantage. In an increasingly turbulent world, the Nordics are becoming more attractive—for businesses, investments, tourists, and talent. Several saw major opportunities in the coming decades.

Collaboration – From Rhetoric to Practice
Most conversations highlighted the need for concrete cooperation. The Team Sweden initiative was pointed out as an important model, with a call for clearer distribution of responsibilities, shared goals, and more efficient coordination between actors.

The Fashion and Textile Industry in Transition
A particular focus was placed on the fashion and textile industry’s transition toward circular and more sustainable business models. Collaborations between large companies and startups—where insight-driven pilot projects, AI, and tech innovations were discussed—made it clear that innovation and business value must go hand in hand. To succeed, courage, flexibility, and strong collaboration with the market—i.e., businesses—are essential.

Startups and Sustainable Business
Several discussions stressed that innovation must be based on real needs—but also be commercially sustainable. Incubators, the courage to experiment, and openness to new ideas are critical. Cross-industry ideas that challenge existing structures could become key to future competitiveness.

Culture as a Driving Force
Culture is not just an expression—it is a cornerstone of democracy. In the Nordics, we must continue to safeguard free culture, especially at a time when it is being restricted elsewhere in the world. It is a matter of identity, cohesion, and belief in the future.

Future Opportunities Require Courage and Coordination
To meet upcoming challenges and realize the potential of Sweden and the Nordics, more than just visions are needed.

It takes courage, collaboration, and long-term investments—and above all, good people who are willing to work to preserve our values and our democracy.
